10 Reasons Why You Need A 3DS

Author // Dan

It’s been almost a year since the Nintendo 3DS was first released and, with its price tag severely reduced from what most of us paid on launch day, now has never been a better time to revisit the prospect of purchasing one of your own. And for those of you that need a little extra push please enjoy my list of the top ten reasons to own a 3DS.

1. It is not just a 3D gimmick. You might have been able to get away with saying that during launch, but not so much, now. As you will see down the list, there is much more to the 3DS than simply 3D, and the kinds of exclusive games being developed for it far outclass anything being put out for the DS.

2. It’s a whole lot cheaper. The price was reduced by almost a third. Nintendo 3DS

3. Backwards compatibility. Even if you don’t like the exclusive games out for the 3DS, you can always fall back on regular DS games.

4. Social gaming. How long have gamers been yelling at Nintendo for all but ignoring the prospect of social gaming? The 3DS is actually making an effort with a series of applications and games that actually, in some respects, require you to reach out to other players.

5. Immersive gameplay. Augmented reality games, motion controls and stereoscopic 3D can all combine to create some truly engaging gaming experiences.

6. Developers are starting to wake up. All right, so maybe the games that were first released for the 3DS were nothing to write home about, but the same could honestly be said for any popular console on the market. Developers, recently, have really woken up to what the 3DS is capable of and the coming years should reveal some remarkable handheld gaming.

7. Virtual console. This version of the famous retro game store actually features older handheld games. There are even 3D versions of classic NES games.

8. Netflix?! Netflix, Hulu and Nintendo’s own video service. If you have a good clear wire connection, then you can stream movies and shows straight to your handheld.

9. Improved stylus. No big deal, right? Except that the core fundamental of the DS (in any incarnation) has been a touchscreen and a stylus. The 3DS finally comes with a stylus you can adjust to fit comfortably in your hands.

10. It’s simply a better product. Better hardware, better firmware, better display and more control options make the 3DS a vastly superior product to its predecessors. The long short of it is that the 3DS is a quality piece of hardware with enough capabilities to deliver some truly innovative, handheld gaming. And while it may look like a regular old DS with some bells and whistles, as you have read, the 3DS far outshines its predecessor.
