A conversation with Mike at E3
So while Mike gets to wander the awesomeness that is E3, I get to sit in my apartment out in New York, waiting to hear the last awesome thing he just got to see.
The entire contents of the following post have been transmitted from Mike's mobile in California, to my computer here in New York, and then back to California where our server is located. Hooray for modern technology! Please excuse and spelling or grammatical errors from here on out, if you have any problems with it, blame iPhone auto correct.
Machine Gun Jetpack (Halfbrick)
Machine Gun Jetpack seemed cool, but I'm concerned it would be way too monotous. It's one level, infinite and random generated. you touch too float up, release to fall, and avoid obstacles collecting coins and poweups. You can also buy coins with actual money if you're really impatient or like pissing money away. One of the powerups teleports you around the screen in the direction of an oscillating arrow everytime you touch. Depending on the number and frequency of powerups that could provide the needed variety. It's too soon to tell, but if you like simple iphone games this could be good for you.
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Nintendo EAD)
OK so I was so engrossed in the boss battle I chose I. The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword that I didn't get to try either of the other two game areas (giant bird flying or dungeon area), but what I found was that one to one motion makes combat very interesting. you need to slash in a specific direction to hit the boss, who also has a sword. The control scheme already worked really well in Twilight Princess, so Skyward Sword seems like an evolution of a good thing. Link has a bit brighter look, with colors closer to ocarina of time. that said the boss I fought seemed like a square enix villain, with feminine looks and long white hair. he also stuck his tongue out in a really nasty manner. I felt violated.
Resistance 3 (Insomniac Games)
I played it in 3D which was pretty cool. My first experience with an FPS in 3D so it was pretty cool. Having bullets fly at my face and wind storms and pretty much everything looks cooler when you shoot it in 3D. At first the camera panning was uncomfortable and blurry to me, but after a while it didnt bother me at all. In general as a shooter I would lament the lack of a cover system, but then, that's just how things used to be. Vibration underscored every bullet, and the simulated surround sound headphones they had made all the explosions and gunfire...well surround me. 10 minutes well spent splattering aliens.
Luigi's Mansion 2 (Next Level Games)
Spent quite a while roaming about the 3DS area. They're giving out pins for each of the nintendo published games which is neat. Luigi's Mansion looks great and takes good advantage of the 3D, but I found that the general concept is a bit simplistic. Hit A to stun the ghost, hold R to suck it in, and hit A every so often (or mash it if you like) to capture a ghost. The ghosts are invisible, and some of them have tells, like one ghost causes candles he passes to go out, but in general you could just spam A until you find it. The demo was short though, and it was still quite fun. I hope that with more play there'll be a bit more complicated ghost battles and puzzles to solve.
